Perfumery is more than making a pleasant smell

A perfume is not simply a collection of ingredients mixed together. Perfumery involves understanding aromatic materials, their characteristics, their interactions, and the way a fragrance develops over time.

A perfumer considers how different materials contribute to the opening, development, and lasting character of a composition.

The materials behind a fragrance

Fragrances can contain many different types of aromatic materials. These may include essential oils, absolutes, isolates, aroma chemicals, resins, extracts, and other perfumery materials.

Balance is at the heart of composition

Good perfumery is not necessarily about using the largest number of materials. It is about giving each material an appropriate role and creating harmony between them.

This is where technical understanding meets creativity. The same material can behave very differently depending on what it is combined with and in what proportion.

A continuing craft

Perfumery combines knowledge, observation, experimentation, and patience. Understanding the craft allows us to appreciate a fragrance not only for how it smells, but also for how it was conceived and constructed.
